Eurpterids, also known as sea scorpions, first appeared 480 million years ago in the Ordovician Period. While largely aquatic, there’s evidence that they may have had a dual respiratory system, which would have allowed for short trips onto land. Most members of this group grew to only 8 inches in length, but the largest species sometimes exceeded 2.5 meters, or 8 feet long.
