Species: Scyphocrinites elegens

Age: Silurian, 420 million years old

Location: Erfoud, Morocco

While this fossil seems to resemble a plant, Crinoids are actually a group of plant-like animals that filled a similar niche to modern-day corals. These animals would anchor themselves to rocks and shallow sea floors with their “foot,” and their “head” would extend upwards, floating around in the water column as their many arms collected microscopic food from the water currents.
