Description
Fossil Juvenile Walrus Jaw (260216a)
Species: Odobenus rosmarus
Age: Pleistocene, 50,000 years old
Location: St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, USA
This is the lower mandible from an ancient baby walrus. The jaw itself is in near-perfect condition, missing only a single tooth. The other teeth are all in their original location. These prehistoric walruses are still around today, along the Pacific Coast as a modern protected species. This jaw was legally collected, professionally sealed, and prepared in accordance with all local laws in effect at the time. Now it is very hard to collect this type of material without belonging to a First Nations group in Alaska. This makes opportunities like this one rare.
