Description

Huge Sycamore Leaf Fossil

Species: Platanus sp. (Sycamore)

Age: Paleocene, 60-65 million years old

Location: McClean County, North Dakota, USA

Formation of Origin: North Shore of Lake Sakakawea

Resembling the Tree Star in the famous animated Land Before Time Movies, this is a beautiful fossil with exceptional detail on the veins. While this species doesn’t have the iconic five-point shape from the movies, the size and visual appearance are strikingly familiar and would be perfect for anyone familiar with the films.

Sycamores are still around to this day, easily recognizable from their white and tan peeling bark, giving them the look of a “sick” tree, so Syc-a-more is the tool I always use in my head to identify them. Ranging from a five-lobed leaf to three, this fossil is from the three-lobed variety and is nearly complete, missing only a few sections on each tip. While it’s likely just a result of preservation damage, it’s fun to think that an animal had something to do with this damage.

The offer includes a stand and a Certificate of Authenticity.
