Description

Large Ammolite Shard, Green, Orange, Red

Name: Ammolite (fossil and gemstone)

Age: Late Cretaceous, 76- 70 million years

Formation: Bear Paw Formation

Location: Alberta, Canada

Found in the remains of an Inland Sea that once divided North America, known as the Bear Paw Sea, ammolite is what happens when ammonites (a nautilus-like sea creature) die in the right mineral conditions to make opal crystals. This only occurs in a small section of Alberta, Canada, with a goldilocks zone of mineral properties, and immense pressure from tectonics and glaciers come together to create one of nature’s most beautiful fossils. The outer shell of the animal becomes mineralized as opal, creating stunning visuals of reds, yellows, oranges, and rarely, purples and blues, which are the most coveted.

The angle is everything for ammolite; for images, we try to show the best possible view where the colors are the brightest. When it’s yours, be sure to experiment with angle and light location to make it pop; otherwise, the colors can appear muted.

Items have been cut, polished, and applied with mineral oil to bring out their natural colors and patterns. These are great for display, jewelry, or as a teaching tool on the process of fossilization and its many forms.
