Description

MODEL: Dire Wolf Skull (260206d)

*** While we usually do not carry models on this site, we received several as part of an old collection we purchased. These high-quality models are primarily 1:1 scale replicas of real fossil remains and are a great way to add iconic species to your collection without spending a fortune. The species, age, and location information provided below are those of the original fossil, not the model itself. Additionally, as models, they are far less fragile and would make the perfect gift for teachers, children, or collectors to display around the house.***

Species: Canus doris or Aenocyon dirus (as of 2020)

Age: Pleistocene, 125,000 – 9,500 years old

Formation: La Brea Tar Pits

Location: Los Angeles, California, USA

With over 3,600 individuals discovered at the La Brea Tar Pits, we know quite a bit about the biology of this animal. Dire Wolves are around 20% larger than modern Grey wolves, and unlike in Game of Thrones or the Colossal Bio variants depictions, were likely a tanish brown coloration to blend in on the North American Grasslands. An original fossil would normally cost between 30-50 thousand USD at auction.

The model comes with a metal name tag and a stand, as shown in the images. For shipping purposes, the model will likely come with the parts separated within the box to avoid damage.
