Description
Orthoceras Squid Fossil Plate
Species: Orthoceras sp.
Age: Devonian period, 370 million years old
Location: Atlas Mountains, Morocco, North Africa
This is a mass mortality plate of Orthoceras, a species of squid-like cephalopods. Similar to Ammonites, only the hard shell remained preserved after the fossilization process, as soft tissue like the head and tentacles rarely survives into the fossil record. This plate has been cut, and the inclusions have been polished to show the inner structure of each squid’s shell. This allows you to see the chambers used to give the animal buoyancy in the water.
Each comes with a display stand and a Certificate of Authenticity
