This is a great, double, whole ammonite plate specimen, a type of ancient sea creature most comparable to modern-day nautilus. These animals lived their whole lives in shells, which are found as fossils all over the world. Their many tentacled bodies would stick out of the shell to help them catch food, steer around, and see their environment. While their soft parts rarely fossilize, the remains of their shell have been used to identify thousands of different species. In fact, some collectors devote their entire collection solely to gathering different types of ammonites.
