Frequently Asked Questions

Are your fossils authentic?

Yes, absolutely. Every item sold at Stones & Bones is 100% authentic and verified. We have over 35 years of experience in the fossil industry and stand fully behind the authenticity of each piece. Additionally, most items include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for your records and peace of mind.

Do your fossils come with any documentation?

Most of our fossils include a Certificate of Authenticity that details the species name, geological age, location, and formation of origin. This documentation is especially valuable for collectors, investors, and anyone who may wish to sell or donate the piece in the future.

Have any of your fossils been restored or repaired?

We are fully transparent about the condition of every piece. Where restoration or minor repair has been performed — which is common and standard practice in the industry — it is noted in the product description. We never knowingly misrepresent the condition of an item.

Do you buy fossils or private collections?

Yes, we do! We are always interested in acquiring quality fossils and collections. The process typically works like this: start by emailing us photos or giving us a call so we can get an initial sense of what you have. From there, we’ll let you know if the pieces are something we’d be interested in. For anything of significant value or size, we will generally need to see the items in person before making a purchase — condition, preparation quality, and provenance are all factors we assess hands-on. Please don’t hesitate to reach out; we love hearing from fellow collectors. You can email us at avery@stonesbones.com or call us at (678) 310-4330.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship worldwide, so you can get a cost estimate simply by putting in your address during the checkout process. For domestic orders over $100, we offer a discount on shipping. International orders may be subject to additional shipping charges, customs fees, and import duties depending on your country — please contact us before purchasing if you have questions about international delivery.

How are fragile fossils packaged for shipping?

We take great care in packaging every order. Fossils are individually wrapped and secured with appropriate cushioning materials to ensure they arrive safely. Some larger or more delicate pieces require special handling — this will be noted in the item’s description, and shipping costs for those pieces will be calculated accordingly.

What is your return policy?

Satisfaction guaranteed — all specimens are shipped with your satisfaction in mind. If you are not completely satisfied, you may return your shipment within 15 days for a credit or refund. The returned item must be in the same condition as received and accompanied by the original invoice or a copy. Please contact us before returning any item. Please note that you are responsible for shipping charges both to and from us, and we strongly suggest insuring your return in case of damage in transit. All shipments from us are fully insured. See our full company policy.

What if my item arrived damaged?

While we pack every order with great care, damage in transit can occasionally happen which is why we insure every package. If your item arrives damaged, please take the following steps right away: First, take photos of the outer shipping box before opening it further, capturing evidence of any visible damage to the packaging. Then, photograph the item itself and all packing materials as they were inside the box. Do not discard the box or any packing materials — these are essential for filing an insurance claim. Once you have your photos, email them to us at avery@stonesbones.com as soon as possible so we can file a claim with the shipper on your behalf and work to get things resolved quickly.

Can I see your inventory in person?

We don’t have a traditional walk-in showroom, but we do travel to fossil and gem shows across the country throughout the year. Check our Trade Shows page for upcoming events near you. You’re also welcome to contact us directly with any questions — we’re always happy to help over the phone or by email.

Do you sell wholesale or offer discounts to dealers and educators?

We have long standing relationships with museums, schools, and dealers, and are happy to discuss wholesale or educational pricing. Please reach out directly to talk through what you’re looking for.

How do I know a fossil is a good investment or gift?

With over three decades in the business, we’re happy to help guide you. Whether you’re shopping for a first-time collector, a seasoned enthusiast, or looking for a truly unique gift, we can point you toward pieces that suit your budget, taste, and goals. Don’t hesitate to call or email — personal service is something we take pride in.

Are stone-knapped knives and other stone tools authentic handcrafted items?

Yes. Our stone-knapped knives and tools are handcrafted using traditional flint-knapping techniques. They are decorative and collectible items, not intended for use as functional blades.

Do your jewelry and art pieces use real fossils and minerals?

Yes. Our fossil jewelry and mineral art pieces incorporate genuine materials. Product descriptions will specify what each piece contains. These make for exceptional wearable or displayable conversation pieces.  See our fossil jewelry & art selections.

I’m new to fossil collecting — where do I start?

Welcome! We love introducing new collectors to the hobby. A great starting point is our shark teeth or trilobite collections, which offer beautiful, well-preserved specimens at accessible price points. Additionally, check out our “Gifts Under $50” page for items for younger collectors on a budget. As always, feel free to call or email us — we genuinely enjoy helping people find that first piece that sparks a lifelong passion.  https://stonesbones.com/fossils-specimens-minerals/collection-kits/
